BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to a convenience store around 11:15 p.m. Monday night in the 700 block of Heflin Avenue West. They were asked to investigate a report of a store clerk that reportedly had been shot and robbed.
According to deputies, the 39-year-old victim was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds when they arrived. The victim was transported to a hospital with life-threatening injuries and remains in critical condition.
The Sheriff’s Office reports that the crime scene indicated that the store clerk had closed for the night and was putting items in the front passenger seat of his car, when a black male came up from behind the van and shot the clerk. The suspect allegedly picked up a money bag and fired shots at the victim again before he left the scene on foot.
It is reported that the suspect was wearing a black shirt, black pants and white shoes.
Deputies used a tracking dog to try and find the suspect. The dog tracked the scent to a nearby intersection, where deputies believe that the suspect got into a vehicle and drove away.
