HOOVER, Ala. (WIAT) — Some shoppers have waited years for this. Trendy clothing store H&M is opening at the Riverchase Galleria Thursday.
This comes at a time when it seems there is not a lot of interest in shopping malls.
Two years ago, H&M was named one of the most-wanted retailers in the Birmingham area. The new 25,000 square foot store is bringing in about 30 new jobs.
Thursday’s grand opening is expected to bring out a crowd of about 450-1000 people.
“I’m excited, I haven’t seen an H&M since Florida and I love H&M,” said Amber Maddox.
“It’ll be an addition to the mall and addition to stores for people like me and my cousin other people who like to dress to have a diverse group of stores, so we can have options,” said Kaye Loveletter.
Malls across the country have tried to find new ways to attract more shoppers as more of the larger department stores move out.
“I literally shop online a lot but since the H&M is here I may be able to go in there and find some things and it may keep me active in the mall,” said Loveletter.
In August, Macy’s announced it was closing about 100 stores nationwide. The operations manager at the Galleria says as of Thursday he hadn’t heard anything about Macy’s closing its doors.
“Places like Belk, places like Macys, JCPenney don’t shop in those areas because they don’t give me the outlet for fashion and stylish clothes like H&M,” said Loveletter.
Right now, the only other new store coming to the mall anytime soon is Charlotte Russe.
Another H&M is expected to open next year at Grand River in Leeds.
The first 100 people in line at the new H&M will get a fashion pass with a mystery store credit worth up to $300.
Shoppers are invited to wait in line starting at 7 a.m., the store opens at noon.
