TUSCALOOSA COUNTY, Ala. (WIAT) — Officials in Tuscaloosa County say there’s a problem with illegal dumping. In fact they are seeing an increase in the amount of trash being dumped in rural areas of the county.
The County Solid Waste Department wants to take steps to crack down on the problem.
Officials say the Holt community In Tuscaloosa County is one of the worst areas for illegal dumping. At any given time you can find all kinds of trash and even furniture.
Director Jim Patrie would like to hire solid waste officers who could write citations if people are caught dumping trash. Currently, only law enforcement can hand out fines to offenders.
“We are trying to figure out a way where we can do something that’s within the law, and when people do things like that we are looking at ways where maybe we can take them to court to put more teeth into the program to show people we are serious about keeping our county clean,” Patrie said.
Illegally dumping trash is a Class C misdemeanor. The first offense is a $200 dollar fine. The second offense is $500 dollars.
