WALKER COUNTY, Ala. (WIAT) — The two suspects previously charged with burglary of Lyle Guthrie’s Oakman home have now had their charges upgraded to capital murder.
Officials say Guthrie was shot after pursuing burglary suspects who he found inside his home. He was unarmed, the Sheriff’s Office said.
39-year-old Easton Gant of Coaling and 19-year-old Jakob Aaron Harris of Vance are now charged with capital murder in his death. He died after being airlifted to UAB for treatment.
The sheriff’s office says they have obtained warrants for Harris and Gant for capital murder while committing burglary and capital murder while shooting into an occupied vehicle.
“We have enough facts and evidence to charge both under the law. Should a jury get the case, they will determine whether it was death caused during a Burglary or death caused while shooting into an occupied vehicle,” the sheriff’s office explained on Facebook.
Both suspects are being held without bond on the upgraded charges.
