Southside bartender shot at work recovering in hospital

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — A Southside bartender is still in the hospital Friday morning. He was shot early Wednesday morning after asking an underage girl to leave the bar he was working at.

Zakk Earle’s been working at Upside Down Plaza for the past two and a half years. Look on Facebook and you’ll see a flood of nice things said about him and that he’s “one of the good guys.” He tells CBS42 that what happened the other night was a “freak accident.”

He was shot in the stomach at almost point blank range after asking an underage girl to leave the bar while he was working. The girl and the guy she was with reportedly got into an argument with Zakk, allegedly jumped him and then he was shot.

CBS42 spoke with Zakk from his hospital room. He says he’s just thankful to be here and is overwhelmed by the amount of support from the community.

“It’s just really cool to see what the community can do when everyone comes together,” Zakk said. “I definitely appreciate it, it’s very, very humbling.”

A GoFundMe was set up by a friend to help with his medical bills.
