HOMEWOOD, Ala. (WIAT) — Millions of people have seen the video of Samford linebacker Deion Pierre proposing to his girlfriend after Saturday’s game. Social media is sharing the video everywhere.
Pierre knew he was going to ask Jasmine to marry him. The two talked about it for many months. Pierre kept telling her that he couldn’t afford a ring. That might have been a lie.
“That threw her off!” Pierre laughed. Just a couple of days after the proposal and Jasmine is still talking about how surprised she was. It was a big for the couple, who started dating back in high school. Pierre wanted Saturday to be the best day.
“The only way this day is going to be the best day is if we win,” Pierre recalled. The Bulldogs beat the Virginia Military Institute 55 – 21. This was Jasmine’s first time watching him play all season. Pierre caught an interception and ran it back for a touchdown.
“In that moment, I was like ‘Man, what would have happened if I had this ring on the sideline waiting to propose? Like this would have been the greatest moment to do it’,” Pierre said. But he and his teammates had rehearsed the postgame routine. The music, the roses, the dancing; all of it was planned out.
Pierre’s team came through. A thoroughly surprised Jasmine, surrounded by football players and their families, made one of the biggest decisions in her life.
“She said yes,” Pierre smiled, “She did and it made me very happy.”
Pierre says with all the negativity in the world, he’s glad this special moment for Jasmine and him is bringing some joy.
“We want everybody to know that there’s love everywhere, There is love to give and to receive,” Pierre said.
The couple haven’t set a date yet. Jasmine goes to college in Florida. Both said the wedding would have to wait until after they graduate.
The Samford Bulldogs are 5-1 in the Southern Conference. Pierre wants everyone to come to their game this Saturday at 6 p.m. at Samford University.
