TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WIAT) — The city of Tuscaloosa is looking to bring back commercial airline services to the Tuscaloosa Regional Airport. Talks are underway now to discuss possibilities.

It’s been nearly 20 years since a commercial airline has operated at the Tuscaloosa Regional Airport. But city leaders are hoping commercial airline service becomes a reality. City council member Kip Tyner says the process is going well.

“It is definitely something the people of Tuscaloosa have wanted–there is hardly a week that by where someone says, ‘are we ever going to get airline service back in Tuscaloosa?’ So I think for the first time we are making a concerted effort to do just that,” Tyner said.

The Tuscaloosa City Council is working with a consultant trying to bring a commercial airline to the airport. Discussions are underway; the consultant group is meeting with several commercial airlines including: American Airlines, SkyWest Airlines, ViaAir, and Southern Airways Express, a commuter airline based in Memphis, Tennessee.

“Well first of all it will provide the ability to let lots of people to fly into Tuscaloosa. You can fly Delta or American into Birmingham or Atlanta, then you could, say, be able to fly from Atlanta to Tuscaloosa and that would be great,” Tyner said.

The consultant company hired by the city will meet with four airline companies this week in Kentucky to discuss the proposed project.
