GADSDEN, Ala. (WIAT) — A 22-year-old Gadsden mother is in jail after police say her infant was found dead.
Police responded to a home around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday along North 6th Street on a call of an unresponsive 6-week-old infant. When officers arrived, they found the infant already deceased.
Gadsden Police Sgt. John Hallman says that after detectives interviewed witnesses, the mother of the child, Autumn Vanessa Gray, was arrested and charged with reckless murder. Her bond is set at $250,000.
According to Hallman, the home on 6th Street belonged to friends of Gray’s, who called 9-1-1.
“My heart aches for the family, and everyone who that little child’s touched in her little, short life,” Hallman said. “My heart aches for the detectives who have to speak for her. It makes you want to hug your child even tighter.”
The child’s body has been taken to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences for autopsy. The cause of death and identity of the child are not being released.
