ATMORE, Ala. (WIAT) — The Alabama Department of Corrections is investigating an assault on a corrections lieutenant that was reported today at the William C. Holman Correctional Facility in Atmore, according to a release from the Alabama Department of Corrections.
The assault reportedly occurred inside the prison at 1 p.m. when the lieutenant was attempting to control the inmate who was making threatening remarks to other officers. According to the release, the inmate used a makeshift weapon in the assault.
The lieutenant reportedly suffered a minor cut to his eyelid, was transported to a local hospital, and released.
According to the release, this is the second assault on a corrections official at the prison since September, when Officer Kenneth Bettis was stabbed on Sept. 1. Bettis later succumbed to his injuries.
The prison is locked down while ADOC investigates the incident.
