STERRETT, Ala. (WIAT) — One person is dead after an officer-involved shooting in Shelby County. Deputies responded to a domestic situation at a home on Old Highway 280 Saturday night.
The sheriff’s office says they were called to try and de-escalate a domestic situation involving a mentally ill family member.
When they arrived, investigators say deputies first spoke with the caller, and then were confronted by Nathaniel Dorough, 21. Dorough was reportedly carrying a weapon and charged at the officers. Deputies opened fire when he charged at them again.
According to the sheriff’s office, the deputy used deadly physical force to protect himself and others, and deputies immediately gave Dorough medical aid. Chelsea Fire and Rescue paramedics responded, but Dorough was pronounced dead at the scene.
“This is a sad event and I offer my deepest condolences to Nathaniel’s family and friends. Mental health issues are one of the biggest concerns facing our country and our county,” said Shelby County Sheriff Samaniego. “The actions taken tonight will be reviewed in depth by the District Attorney’s Office and the Sheriff’s Office will be completely transparent and forthcoming with anything they need to complete their investigation.”
