HOMEWOOD, Ala. (WIAT) — UPDATE (x2): Valley Avenue is no longer blocked off.
UPDATE: According to Merrick Wilson of Homewood City Schools, Homewood Middle School now has running water and will start on time.
ORIGINAL: A water main break on Valley Avenue is at the very least partially blocking the road and causing water pressure issues for homes and businesses nearby.
Meanwhile, water is gushing into the street during a stage 3 drought, and officials tell us they don’t yet know when it will be fixed. Homewood Mayor Scott McBrayer says the Overlook Apartments and surrounding areas may be without water for the rest of the night.
The fire department is on the scene and has a plan in case there is a fire and they need access to water.
The water main that is affected is 16 inches and there is no ETA of when it will be fixed. The flow is originating on the hill across from the Overlook apartments near Homewood Middle School, at Valley Ave and Mecca Ave.
Birmingham Water Works has crews on the scene. CBS42 will bring you a live look at the scene on the 10 p.m. news. We’re working to find out what the impact on the residents and businesses in the nearby area will be, and if the school will be affected in anyway.
