Suspect in hospital after reportedly caught shoplifting at Galleria, swallowing heroin

HOOVER, Ala. (WIAT) — A suspect is recovering at UAB Hospital and awaiting transportation to Jefferson County Jail after an incident at Von Maur in the Riverchase Galleria, according to a release from Hoover Police.

Police responded to the store around 4:19 p.m. on Monday after receiving a report of a shoplifter fighting with an employee, according to the release. A white male was reportedly trying to leave the store with articles of clothing concealed on his person.

When an employee tried to stop him, the suspect reportedly struck her in the face. Other employees assisted in detaining the shoplifter until police arrived.

Upon arrival at the scene, police reportedly found a syringe on his person, and the suspect told officers that he had swallowed some heroin prior to being arrested.

27-year-old Matthew Craig Edgil was transported to UAB Hospital to be treated for ingesting heroin, and will later be moved to Jefferson County Jail.

He is to be booked on 3rd Degree Robbery and Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia charges and being held on a $10,300 bond.
