Rescued donkey joins Walker County family after daughter’s pet was shot, killed

WALKER COUNTY, Ala. (WIAT) — An 8-year-old Alabama girl who recently lost her best friend–her donkey Nelly Belle–got a surprise delivery Wednesday afternoon.

8-year-old Peyton’s donkey Nelly Belle was found dead earlier this month by their farmhand. It wasn’t until they tried to move her that they saw she had been shot twice.

Now, Tinkerbell the donkey who was rescued from slaughter made her way to Peyton thanks to a Florida based nonprofit.

A friend of equine rescue Serenity Saviors saw our story on, and was determined to try and help the Kennedy family despite their position that they did not want any fundraisers or donations. They were looking for a loving home for Tinkerbell, and decided that Peyton would be perfect.

Peyton’s mom captured Tinkerbell’s arrival on camera, and we shared it on the CBS42 News at 5. The family tells us though they still miss Nelly, they are overwhelmed with the new opportunity for love.
