GADSDEN, Ala. (WIAT) — UPDATE OCT. 31: Gadsden police say a suspect has been arrested in the forceful carjacking of an elderly woman.
Police say the victim was going to play bingo at the elliott Community Center when the suspect approached her and asked for a ride. When she said she couldn’t, he snatched her keys, knocking her to the ground. She sustained injuries to the head, hands and arms and taken to the hospital.
Police say David Jeffrey Bullock, 40, of Gadsden, was arrested early Saturday morning. He was charged Monday with robbery in the 1st. His bond is set at $75,000 cash.
Her vehicle has not been recovered yet. The vehicle is described as a white, 2008 Buick Lucerne, displaying Alabama tag number 5421AM5. ORIGINAL: An 89-year-old Rainbow City woman is recovering after she was pushed to the ground and had her car was stolen outside the Elliott Community Center in Gadsden.
Police say the incident happened Thursday just before noon, when the woman was getting ready to play bingo. As she was approaching her car, a well-dressed white male came up to the victim and asked her for a ride to Glencoe.
“She told him she was playing bingo, had to play bingo, and that’s when he attempted to snatch the keys out of her hands,” said Sgt. John Hallman with Gadsden PD. “During the struggle, he shoved her to the ground and left with the vehicle.”
The vehicle stolen was a white 2008 Buick Lucerne with a tag reading “5421AM5.” It was last seen traveling south on North 28th Street.
The woman was treated by paramedics on scene and taken to the hospital, where she was treated for injuries to her hands and elbows and is expected to be fine.
