BESSEMER, Ala. (WIAT) — A corrections officer is recovering after he was stabbed by an inmate during a search of the inmate’s cell at the William E. Donaldson Correctional Facility.
According to the Alabama Department of Corrections, inmate Shawn Baker, 32 is serving life without parole for a 2007 attempted murder conviction out of Madison County. Officials say the officer found contraband during a midnight search of Baker’s cell and questioned the inmate. They say Baker then assaulted the officer with a concealed makeshift knife.
The officer sustained a head wound and defensive wounds to his hands and was treated at a local hospital for the injuries that are not life threatening.
Officials say Baker will be charged for the attack. No one else was involved in the assault, and the prison was not placed on lockdown after the stabbing.
