Walker County emergency services battle wildfire on Aaron Loop

WALKER COUNTY, ALA. (WIAT)- Flames erupted Wednesday afternoon threatening Christi Wyatt’s home on Aaron Loop in the Pineywood Community. Wyatt was worried.

“I was worried because the wind was blowing and it the house would catch on fire,” said Wyatt.

With hard work from three area fire departments and the Alabama Forestry Commission they were able to put in fire breaks and contain the six acre fire.

There have been several wildfires in Walker County within the last week. Over in the Empire area several large wildfires breaking out. The biggest one starting on Friday.

“It started from 250 acres to 600 acres to now at 1308 acres,” said Jason Berry with the Alabama Forestry Commission.

Fire crews had to deal with a tough layout fighting the fire.

“It has a difficult terrain, also there is down timber from the 2011 tornadoes, you have many things working against you,” said Berry.

The fire jumped fire breaks, and it took air support and hard work to contain the fire. Power poles in the area caught fire and crews had to replace them Wednesday.

Fire crews say the fire is contained but it will be at least a week until the fire is completely out. There was a separate fire 125 acres fire nearby and two other fires. One, a house caught fire, and an abandon truck caught fire.

The Alabama Fire Commission believes these fires are arson.
