GARDENDALE, Ala. (WIAT) — A Bragg Middle School teacher has an extra $1000 to spend on her classroom!
Ms. Zay Allen was surprised by our One Class at a Time team Tuesday morning.
Her reaction was a mix of shock and excitement. “I couldn’t believe it! I never win stuff, never! I did this once before in my second year teaching and didn’t hear anything. So I said, ‘Oh, well, it’s year seventeen. Why not try again,” said Allen.
The second time was the charm! Allen plans to buy a classroom set of medical dictionaries to help the students research and better understand some of the materials she teaches.
“We’re teaching our children how to think. And they’re basically learning how to research. So I said I was going to go low-tech. They need to learn how to look in dictionaries to be able to find words that they’re reading about to increase their reading comprehension so that they can think and make good decisions and become good problem solvers,” Allen said.
With all the technology in the world today, you might wonder why she is going back to the books.
” WiFi is not always available. So I decided I wanted something in their hands that would get them to looking and thinking, but I needed the more scientific words,” said Allen.
Allen says her new set of medical dictionaries will go a long way for many years to come.
