Tuscaloosa high school marks 241st birthday of U.S. Marine Corps with JROTC promotion ceremony

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WIAT) — Today marks the 241st birthday of the U.S Marine Corps.

Celebrations were held across the country, including in Tuscaloosa. 80 cadets with the Paul W. Bryant Marine Corps Junior ROTC were promoted to their next higher rank.

Officials tell us the program helps young people become better students.

“We are promoting some of our cadets and this is our first promotion of the year who have met all the requirements they need to get promoted,” Senior Marine Instructor Major Jason York said. “Secondly we are recognizing our designation as a Naval honors school which is a big achievement that puts us in the top twenty percent of the JROTC programs in the nation.”

During today’s ceremony, Paul W. Bryant High School was also recognized as a naval honor school.

That will allow the school to recommend candidates to the U.S. military academies.

Typically, those recommendations have to come from a member of Congress.
