BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — A suspect has been detained after turning up at a hospital after a reported robbery, according to a release from Birmingham Police.
The suspect, Demetria Dinkins Jr., reportedly walked into the Advance Auto Parts on the 5300 block of Oporto Madrid on Friday around 1 p.m., and proceeded to rob four employees and a citizen in the store.
According to the report, Dinkins fled the scene and was followed by citizens that gave police directions on where he was going. The suspect reportedly stopped on Montclair Road, when citizens allege they heard gunfire coming from his vehicle. At this point, they returned fire and struck the suspect.
The suspect fled, and later hit two vehicles and disabled his car. The suspect reportedly eluded officers, and later turned up at St. Vincent’s Hospital where he was taken into custody.
Dinkins, who was reportedly wearing an ankle monitor during the ordeal, is charged on five counts of robbery and being held on a bond of $200,000.
There are no charges filed towards the citizens at this time.
