CULLMAN COUNTY, Ala. (WIAT) — An armed person is in critical condition after exchanging fire with a deputy, Cullman County Sheriff Matt Gentry says.
Gentry said at a press conference this afternoon that the deputy was responding to a call of a man in posession of a rifle and had been firing it. The subject of the call came outside a residence when the deputy arrived and fired at him. The deputy returned fire and hit the individual.
The State Bureau of Investigation has been called in to investigate the shooting. The subject is in critical condition in the hospital
“This is something that our deputies deal with on a daily basis, and that’s individuals who have mental problems. This is something that law enforcement and sheriffs across the state are dealing with,” Gentry said. He continued to explain that funding has been cut, and said it’s time that the state of Alabama recognize that the law enforcement officers are putting their lives in danger everyday while dealing with the mentally ill.
The shooting occurred at the 5900 block of County Road 1223 around 1:15 p.m.
The deputy involved in the shooting is fine and uninjured. There was another deputy responding to the scene, but at the time of the deputy-involved shooting, the second deputy was minutes away from the scene.
The investigation is ongoing.
