VESTAVIA HILLS, Ala. (WIAT) — A Birmingham man is facing charges after allegedly stealing a vehicle and leading police on a chase through Vestavia.
According to police, around 9:15 a.m. Monday a patrol unit saw a black ford Escape with a broken side rear window and ran the tag. The check revealed the SUV had been stolen from Birmingham.
The officer tried to stop the vehicle on Montgomery Highway and Old Creek Trail, but the vehicle reportedly sped away southbound on Montgomery Highway, turning into the Vestridge Commons Shopping Center. Police say the vehicle then drove over the south bound embankment of the lot trying to escape, significantly damaging the stolen SUV.
Police say the driver, identified now as 37-year-old John A. Jackson of Birmingham, fled on foot, then was taken into custody at the intersection on Montgomery Highway and Massey Road. A small child and an adult female were passengers in the vehicle.
Jackson is charged with Receiving Stolen Property First Degree as well as misdemeanor charges for Reckless Endangerment and Attempting to Elude and taking to the Jefferson County Jail, pending a $10,300 bond. The adult passenger was also arrested, on an outstanding felony warrant. The child is in the custody of relatives. No one was injured in the incident.
