Avoiding constructions zones while traveling to Iron Bowl

ALABAMA (WIAT) — Thousands of people are expected to fill Alabama highways this weekend. Not just for thanksgiving, but for the Iron Bowl on Saturday.

There are multiple options to get to Tuscaloosa from Birmingham. I-20/59 Southbound, Hwy-11 Southbound and AL-216 Westbound are three great options. Due to at least three construction zones on the interstate, AL-216, which is roughly an hour drive, may be the best route.

If you prefer to stay on the interstate, here’s where the work sites are located: Exit 97, 79 to 73 (McFarland Blvd). University of Alabama and ALDOT recommend avoiding the construction zones due to increased traffic volume, lane shifts and closures and reduced speeds.

It is highly suggested to exit I-20/59 at or before Exit 79 in Cottondale. If you take that route, you can access Hwy-11 through Cottondale to University Blvd.
