CLANTON, Ala. (WIAT) — In Chilton County, you’ll find a man whose name has made him a local celebrity. He’s Donald Trump–no relation to the president-elect of the United States.
Donald Lee Trump, as opposed to Donald J. Trump, shies away from life in politics. His name, though, has earned him a lot of notoriety.
“There’s been benefits. I’ve had penthouses, I’ve had first class tickets, I’ve had some free meals,” he said.
The confusion has not always been good, though. He says it’s sometimes gotten him entangled in delicate political conversations.
“They go, ‘I can’t believe you’re even happy with his name, he’s nothing but a jerk.’ I go-‘calm down, I’m not the guy.'”
He lives in Clanton, with his wife, Susan, and a host of pets, including a bird they’re teaching to repeat Donald J. Trump’s campaign slogan, “Make America Great Again.”
“It’s been fun,” Susan Trump laughed. “People telling me, ‘Hey First Lady, how are you today? They’re always telling me, are you going to pack up and move to the White House? Shouldn’t you go home and be packing?'”
Susan Trump has a cleaning business, operating near Maxwell Air Force Base. Her husband, Donald, now does cybersecurity work for Gunter Air Force Base in Montgomery. They both say neighbors have encouraged Donald to run for office, citing his name recognition. For now, he’s staying out of politics.
“I’ve just been enjoying it for now,” he said.
