IRONDALE, Ala. (WIAT) – When the One Class at a Time team interrupted band practice a few weeks ago, Ms. Kathy Turner knew exactly what was happening! Today, she has an extra $1,000 to be thankful for.
“There’s never a day that I wake up, and I don’t want to come to work,” Turner said when asked if she is thankful for her job. “I love these kids. When they come in my room, they know that they are loved, and this is a safe place.”
Turner plans to use the money to buy a new baritone. “Our school instruments are really, really old. Older than me! And they are being held together by duct tape and rubber bands and sometimes even a hot glue! In the past, when I was able to purchase one of those baritones, the kids, their eyes lit up and I knew we need several more!”
Turner says this grant money will go a long way because there are so few sources of funding for band programs. She encourages all of her fellow teachers to apply for this grant that is generously sponsored by America’s First Financial, Little Caesars, and Pepsi.
“Apply, apply, apply! For band programs, we don’t have enough places where we can apply for grants. So having this available to us makes a real big difference in being able to take our group to another level.”
To the sponsors, she says “thank you so much for thinking about giving money to students. Having this makes it so much easier for us and the amount of performances we’ll be able to have with our kids.”
