CLAY COUNTY, Ala. (WIAT) — Firefighters have been battling a wildfire about three miles from Cheaha State Park since 4 a.m. Monday morning.

Ryan Shurette with Cheaha State Park tells us about 1500 acres are actively burning in the Lake Chinnabee area.

Various engine companies and dozers are on the scene fighting the wildfire. Helicopters were on the scene during the day working to battle the blaze.

Shurette says the fire has been jumping containment lines throughout the day. The park itself is part of the USDA Forest Service, and their crews are on the scene working the fire.
