VESTAVIA HILLS, Ala. (WIAT) — There will be strict enforcement of the drought emergency starting Monday in Vestavia Hills, which is when the drought emergency declaration goes into effect.
More than 80% of the state is covered under the two highest categories of drought. Vestavia Hills city leaders felt they wanted to do their part in reducing water consumption. All of the surcharges and restrictions by Birmingham Water Works are still in effect, but this ordinance takes it more steps forward.
Things like no washing your car, unless at a car wash, and strict outdoor water regulations are all in the declaration. There are also more strict guidelines for golf courses.
This declaration also enables police to enforce these new restrictions. Noncompliance can result in misdemeanor charges.
