City Council discusses project to stop illegal dumping

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — City council will discuss a project that could put a stop to illegal dumping happening on Birmingham Airport Authority property. The 249-acre property, off of East Lake Boulevard in the Brownsville Heights Neighborhood, was causing some major frustrations for people living nearby.

CBS42 spoke to Brownsville Neighborhood Association president Harry Giddens in August. At that time, he said neighbors were growing concerned about the number of people illegally dumping trash on the property. Neighbors were also concerned about all of the criminal activity happening on the overgrown property.

The airport authority is stepping in to offer a solution of putting up 23 gates and fencing. The airport authority will also foot the bill for the gates and fences.

The city council is expected to vote on the resolution Monday morning.
