BESSEMER, Ala. (WIAT) — The trial is expected to begin for a Bessemer man facing attempted murder charges. Bessemer Police arrested Donald Ray “Hambone” Wilson last year after an officer shot him.

The shooting happened during the day in front of a crowd on Exeter Avenue. The Bessemer City Attorney says Wilson was carrying a knife and threatening to stab police officers who were there.

Wilson’s family says he is mentally ill. His mother says he carried the knife because he had been attacked before.

She also filed a lawsuit against Bessemer Police, accusing officers of excessive force.
