BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Birmingham city leaders today announced plans to build a new public safety complex in the Ensley community.
We first told you about part of the plan in our special Birmingham 2025.
Mayor William Bell unveiled the proposed $40-million project today. It will be located at the Ramsey McCormack building at Ave E and 19th St.
The complex would house the Birmingham municipal court, police and fire headquarters. It will go before the city council for approval.
“We’ve already identified the money, and what we are doing now is getting ourselves in a position that we can present it to the city council for their support, and I have no doubt that they will be supportive but I don’t want to take any chances,” Mayor William Bell said. “I expect the neighborhood to get behind this effort so that we can make it happen.”
The public safety complex would include retail space, green space and a parking deck.
