Choose the right Christmas tree for you

WEST TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) – With Christmas less than a month a way, you’ll probably need to pick out a tree.

It might take a little deciding before you head to your favorite tree farm. While there are many varieties to choose from, if you don’t bring an essential tool before you go shopping, you’ll regret it later according to Trinity Tree Farm Owner Kent Hutchinson.

“The trees look a lot smaller in the field than what they actually are,” warned Hutchinson. “So it’s best if they have a measuring stick or measuring tape with them. When they get them home and try to stand them up, they have to cut a hole in the roof or shorten the tree.”

The firs will give you the arguably the best aroma, but not as vibrant colors. Spruces hit you with vivid shades of blue and can hold the heaviest ornaments, but the needles don’t last as long. If you want something soft to touch, then you probably want to come home with a white pine.

If any of them appear less than healthy, then you should keep looking.

“The best way to tell is to take a needle off and bend it all the way,” explained Hutchinson. If it snaps in two, you don’t want to buy that tree. If it springs back, you’ve got a fresh enough tree that will be safe during the season.”

Hutchinson says you should water your tree once a day for the first week, and then as needed.

Stick to these tips and hopefully you’ll be in for a happier Christmas.
