AUBURN, Ala. (WIAT)- The Hoover Buccaneers went into the 2016 season on a redemption mission, and came out state champions. The Bucs defeated McGill-Toolen 17-7 Wednesday night at Jordan-Hare Stadium to win the Alabama 7A State Championship.
Coming in, McGill was the overwhelming favorite, having score 531 points this season, but it was the Hoover defense that stole the show. The Bucs forced nine sacks, 17 tackles for loss, while McGill-Toolen ran for -43 yards.
Leading 3-0, CJ Sturdivant put Hoover up 10-0 going into half time with a 2-yard TD run in the second quarter.
Coming out in the third quarter Sturdivant added to that lead with a 37-yard touchdown run, putting Hoover up 17-0.
This is the 12th state championship in Hoover program history.
