BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – WIAT-TV, the local CBS affiliate in Birmingham, AL today announced that Jimmy Cromwell has been named Vice President & General Manager.
Mr. Cromwell joins WIAT after serving in a similar capacity at Media General’s CBS affiliates WJTV in Jackson, MS and WHLT in Hattiesburg, MS since 2011.
He will be tasked with providing strategic direction, leadership and operational management for WIAT-TV. Mr. Cromwell will report to Stan Knott, Vice President of Broadcast Markets for Media General.
“Jimmy and his family spent 10 years in Birmingham and fell in love with the Magic City – this is a homecoming,” said Knott. “He brings with him a passion for local news, community service and a decade of working with CBS affiliates in the Southeast. Jimmy and his team did great things with the CBS affiliate in Jackson.”
Mr. Cromwell comes to WIAT-TV with more than 30 years of sales and management experience in the broadcast, cable and newspaper industries, including time in Birmingham where his two daughters were born and raised. In his most recent position at WJTV and WHLT, he achieved significant news expansion by adding a weekday 4 pm newscast, weekend early morning newscasts, as well as re-engineering WHLT’s weekday 10 pm newscast. He also helped design and implement a state-of-the-art news set and launched two new CW digital channels: Mississippi’s CW in Jackson and CW+ in Hattiesburg. Mr. Cromwell is a strong community advocate, exemplified by his development and continued expansion of Caring for Mississippi, the stations’ major community outreach initiative serving the entire central Mississippi region. He is the chairman of the Mississippi Association of Broadcasters Board of Directors while also serving on the boards of Habitat for Humanity Mississippi, The Mind Center at the University of Mississippi Medical Center Community and Jackson State University HBCU School of Journalism and Media Studies.

Prior to his role as General Manager of WJTV, he was the station’s director of revenue from 2009 to 2011. Before that he held sales management positions at Birmingham’s WBMA and The Birmingham News, Atlanta’s WGCL and Jacksonville’s WJXX. Mr. Cromwell is a graduate of the University of Florida.
