Elderly man has heart attack, dies after robbery at Tuscaloosa County home

COTTONDALE, Ala. (WIAT) — Tuscaloosa County investigators are working the robbery of an elderly couple that occurred at their residence in the 1500 block of 55th Court East in Cottondale, according to a release from the department.

During the course of the robbery, the 77-year-old male was assaulted and died due to a heart attack. His 73-year-old wife was transported to DC, but was not injured. It has been ruled a homicide.

According to the release, one suspect was in camouflage face paint and both were in dark-colored clothing. One was armed with a handgun and the other a rifle.

In addition to many of the couple’s personal items, the suspects also reportedly took their gold 2005 Mercury Marquis. Police said Thursday the stolen vehicle had been recovered after it was found abandoned in the Crescent East Apartments area in Holt.
