13 people confirmed dead from the Tennessee wildfires

GATLINBURG, Tenn. (WIAT) — UPDATE (x2): The Sevier County Mayor reportes that the total fatalities is now at 13.

Five names of the deceased were also released:

  • John Tegler, 71, from Canada
  • Janet Tegler, 70, from Canada
  • John Summers, 61, from Memphis
  • Janet Peso Summers from Memphis
  • Mae Vance

UPDATE: Tennessee officials say 12 now dead in Sevier County wildfires. An additional person died of a heart attack while fleeing the flames.

ORIGINAL: 11 people are now confirmed dead from the Tennessee wildfires. Tennessee Emergency Management says another person was found dead in Sevier County.

On Friday, people who live in the area will be allowed limited access to their homes.

Hurricane-force winds fueled wildfires on Monday night, forcing more than 14,000 people to evacuate the city of Gatlinburg.
