Ballot error and reprinting cost the state almost $460,000

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WIAT) – Alabama Secretary of State John Merrill says the final invoice for reprinting nearly three million ballots cost the state almost $460,000.

The ballots had to be reprinted after an employee made a transcription error in a proposed amendment to help secure funding for state parks. The original ballot left off key language to prevent the state legislature from diverting money from Alabama’s state parks for other government purposes.

The amendment also allowed the state park system to hire more private entities to operate hotels and amenities in the state. It was approved last month.

Merrill says the exact cost totals to $459,690.80. The employee who made the error no longer works in the office.
