HOMEWOOD, Ala. (WIAT) — UPDATE (X2): Homewood Detectives obtained a murder warrant on Wednesday for Tavares Jackson, 26. He was arrested and charged in connection with the shooting death of Shuterica Lipscomb.
Jackson is waiting to be transferred from Homewood City Jail to the Jefferson County Jail, where he will be held without bond.
Police tell us the suspect and the victim were previously in a relationship, and it may have been ongoing.
UPDATE: The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office has identified the victim as Shuterica Shuntavious Lipscomb, 22, of Homewood.
CBS 42 spoke with the victim’s mother, Pamela Rogers, Tuesday on the phone. She said the family is from Evergreen and they were all very close. She had last seen her daughter Saturday.
Rogers said Shuterica had a friend with her the night she died and that friend explained what happened.
“[Shuterica] came out and told her friend that they were going to go to her Auntie’s house. And she went in the room. [Her friend] was thinking she probably went in there to get the keys, her purse or something. The next thing he heard was a gunshot and a scream. Shuterica screaming,” said Rogers.
That friend told Rogers he found Shuterica on the bathroom floor where she had passed out after being shot.
Rogers said her daughter had a bright future and was excited about a new job she had started recently at the Birmingham Airport.
“She worked on the ground like with directing planes, helping direct planes in,” said Rogers. “She loved that job. And she always wanted to work at the airport. Her dream job was to be a stewardess on the plane.”
Rogers said Shuterica leaves behind a 5 month old and a 3 year old.
Homewood police have a person of interest in custody. They said they expect to release an official statement Wednesday.
ORIGINAL: Homewood Police are investigating a shooting that occurred at 900 block of Valley Ridge Drive the afternoon of Monday, Dec. 5 according to a release from the department.
The shooting occurred between 1 and 1:30 p.m., and the victim has been identified as a female at this time.
A person of interest has been taken into custody and is currently being interviewed by detectives.
