NORTHPORT, Ala. (WIAT) — Several deadly Tuscaloosa County wrecks that occurred last week are prompting police to urge drivers to be more cautious on the roadway.

Four people, including a 12-year-old girl Jaisa Hansen, lost their lives in those crashes, several of which occurred in Northport.

The victim’s uncle, Wade Hamner, is devastated.

“The family is going to have to gather together and come to grips that hey she really is gone,” Hamner said. “She is in a better place but is gone from here, and so there is always going to be a void in our hearts for her.”

Jaisa Hansen was riding in the car with four other family members, and she wasn’t wearing her seatbelt.  Her parents had just picked her up from Northside Middle School before the accident happened on Ebenezer Church Road. Her uncle says he wants others to learn from his this tragedy.

“We need to make our families understand, that seat belt is a very important item, it is just as important to the keys to your car,” Hamner said. “Get in that vehicle, put it on, then crank that engine in the vehicle and make sure everyone in the car has them on.”

Tuscaloosa Sheriff Ron Abernathy is urging drivers to be more careful this Christmas holiday season.

“Please wear your seatbelt, I can’t stress that enough how important that is and be aware of your surroundings,” Hamner said. “It can be weather or other vehicles on the roads, but take your time and be careful, and please don’t text, don’t be texting and driving.”

Friends of the victim’s family set up a Go Fund Me page to help pay the family’s medical bills (https://www.gofundme.com/33big3c).  They have raised $1,165.00, and supporters are hoping to raise $4,000 dollars.

According to State Troopers, 638 people have lost their lives this year on Alabama roads.
