NORTHPORT, Ala. (WIAT) — Christmas is only a few days away, and many shoppers this year will be purchasing gifts via online sites like Craigslist. As a result, lots of shoppers will have to meet strangers in person to buy their gifts.
For the second year in a row, Northport Police Department has a safe zone where shoppers can meet to purchase items or make trades with other people. The department is allowing the public to use their parking lot at the Public Safety building to do one-on-one shopping and transactions.
Assistant Chief Keith Carpenter says residents can even check in with the on-duty officer to ensure their safety. The Chief says it will be much safer for residents to come to the police station.
“Just something we want to remind the public of, we are in the business of public safety, and we are trying to make sure the public stays safe in their person and their property,” Carpenter said. “So we want to remind them there was a place they could come to make those transactions with people they didn’t know.”
