Valley Ave at Homewood Middle closed after car crashed into fire hydrant

HOMEWOOD, Ala. (WIAT) — UPDATE: Homewood Police are now investigating this as a hit and run accident. If anyone has information on the vehicle that left the scene, call Homewood Police Department at 205-332-6200.

ORIGINAL: A fire hydrant is spewing water into the air and all over the road after a crash.

As of 5 p.m., the car was still right up there, next to the hydrant.

This all started just after 3 this afternoon. The driver told our crew on the scene that he was heading west on Valley Avenue toward Homewood Middle School when a car coming in the opposite direction swerved and side swiped him. As his car ran into the fire hydrant, the other car kept going.

The driver says he’s okay, just shaken up and has a few cuts.

Valley Avenue, near the middle school, is shut down in both directions.
