CENTER POINT, Ala. (WIAT) — The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department is asking for the public’s help in identifying a man who robbed the Family Dollar store on Center Point Parkway. It happened on Thanksgiving Day just before 6:30 p.m.
Sgt. John Pennington with Crime Stoppers says this robbery was particularly dangerous. He said the robbery took about six minutes — much longer than robberies they typically see — and as time ticks by, chances become greater that things could turn violent.
In the video, the suspect’s face is briefly visible before he covers it with a mask. The suspect finds the clerk and and demands money from the register, but the store is open. The suspect begins waving his gun at the clerk as he appears to make demands.
Then it escalates. Customers walk into the store. The suspect sees them and points his weapon at them. Then they flee.
No one was injured during the robbery, and the suspect fled with the cash. But Sgt. John Pennington says they need to get this guy off the streets fast.
“You’re dealing with someone who for whatever reason is not too concerned apparently about taking a long period of time, increasing the risk of someone getting hurt,” said Pennington. “So there’s a greater chance I think in this case that if this person continues to do this eventually someone is going to wind up getting hurt.”
Pennington said the suspect fled in a newer model blue Dodge Charger.
If you have any information that can help identify the man in the video, contact the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department or call Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777 to leave a tip anonymously.
