JASPER, Ala. (WIAT) – An off duty Police Officer shot Saturday night in Walker County is recovering at UAB Hospital in Birmingham.
The wounded officer has been identified as Shelby Luttrell. He is a part time officer and SWAT instructor with the Cordova Police Department. Spokesperson TJ Armstrong says Luttrell was shot twice, once in the arm and in his stomach.
“Well we have been praying and it makes us feel great knowing that he suffered two gunshot wounds but he will recover 100 percent. The doctors believe he will make a full recovery and it will be a lot quicker than we expected Armstrong said.
The shooting happened Saturday night just after eleven o’clock at the High Forest Apartments where the victim lives with his family. Jasper Police officers are investigating the shooting. Authorities would not elaborate, but CBS 42 has learned there was an altercation before the shots were fired. After a brief search, a suspect was taken into custody.
Some residents like Wayne Williams are concerned. Williams has lived in the complex two years and says there has never been a shooting at the apartments.
“Well it’s bad you know especially when it is an off duty Police Officer. It is very shocking because this here is a nice neighborhood and nice people live here you know” Williams said.
Cordova Police Spokesman TJ Armstrong says Luttrell is a newlywed and is a father. Armstrong says his friends, family and colleagues are praying for his recovery.
“Just to know Shelby is to love him, always laughing and giggling about something and playing jokes on people. He is always willing to help anybody”.
Luttrell left his full time Police job and works full time for Alabama Power.
