Grandmother dies in house fire on Avenue G

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — UPDATE: The family has identified the grandmother as 72-year-old Bertha Files Banks.

ORIGINAL: Birmingham Fire crews responded to a house fire on Avenue G around 4:15 a.m. Heavy fire was showing and 80% of the house was involved, mostly in the back of the home.

A grandmother was found in her bedroom. Her two grandchildren tried to help her, but she could not physically get out.

The two young adult grandchildren were in close proximity to the grandmother, but they were able to make it out safely. They were not transported to the hospital.

Crews did an initial search, but the fire was too strong. They went back in after the fire was contained and found the grandmother.
