Tuscaloosa investigators: 82-year-old man shot to death by wounded son in self defense

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WIAT) — The Metro Homicide squad is on the scene of a deadly shooting Monday morning.

Officials say deputies responded to the home in the 3500 block of Hargrove Rd E around 6:45 a.m. on a man with a gun call. Shortly after, the caller reported someone had been shot.

Deputies arrived to find 82-year-old Archie McDaniel had reportedly shot his 40-year-old son, grazing him in the face with a bullet. He was treated on the scene.

“When the son got out of the vehicle, Mr. McDaniel confronted him with a handgun and threatened to kill him and actually fired a shot that grazed one of his sons,” Hart said.

Teresa Birchfield is shocked, she lives down the road from where the fatal shooting happened.

“It is very sad, very sad and I feel sorry for them.  And my heart goes out to them,” Birchfield said.

Hart told CBS42 News McDaniel’s other son showed up, and McDaniel threatened to shoot and kill him.  The son who was previously shot begged his father to put his gun down, a request that the father refused.

At that point, the man was reportedly forced to shoot and kill his father in self-defense, according to Hart, who believes that McDaniel may have been struggling with his mental health.

Authorities believe that the conflict began on Sunday night when McDaniel threw some personal items onto his yard. His son arrived on Monday morning, and the conflict began that would ultimately end McDaniel’s life.

“I can’t imagine having to do that to a parent,” Birchfield said. “I don’t know if I could do that to a parent, but I guess he had no choice. He has a lot to deal with for the rest of his life. It is very sad.”

At this time, no criminal charges have been filed, but the case will be presented to a grand jury before a final decision is made.
