ENSLEY, Ala (WIAT) — The Birmingham Police Department is conducting a homicide investigation on 2nd Court and 12th Street West, according to Lieutenant Sean Edwards with Birmingham Police Department.
Police arrived at Rickwood Apartments to find 30-year-old Erwin Jones suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead shortly after medics arrived.
Authorities say three men were sitting in the courtyard of the apartments when two armed black men approached them. Following a dispute, the suspects fired multiple rounds at the victim, striking and killing him. Patrol officers believe the dispute occurred over drugs and a gun.
Both suspects fled the scene on foot.
This homicide occurred as the “Operation Eagle” initiative continues for the Birmingham Police Department. The initiative places more officers in high-crime areas around the city. Lt. Edwards said the program will help prevent crimes like these from happening in the future and help police find suspects quickly.
“The way you send a message is you stand up and give us the information we need so we can bring those responsible to justice,” Edwards said. “So we definitely need those people that were in this area that were around here to give us that information.”
