HUEYTOWN, Ala. (WIAT) — UPDATE 7/12: Brandon Carl Goodwin has been charged with murder and booked into the Jefferson County Jail. He is being held on a $150,000 bond.
A 30-year-old man is accused of stabbing his mother to death at their home in Hueytown.
Police Chief Chuck Hagler identified the victim as Maria Jocelyn Goodwin, 55, known to friends as Jocelyn.
The suspect is 30-year-old Carl Brandon Goodwin according to Hagler.
Authorities were called to 25th Avenue Monday morning.
Chief Hagler told media outlets that Brandon Goodwin was at the house when police arrived. According to police, Goodwin was likely killed sometime Saturday.
Hagler said it appeared she had tried to defend herself before she was stabbed multiple times.
Neighbors told CBS 42 News that investigators recently came to the house because of a reported argument. No one expected problems to escalate into a homicide.
“I miss her and I’d just like to hug her one last time,” said Reggie McClinton, a close friend who lived next to the family for more than two decades.
McClinton said friends knew the victim as, “Joceyln,” and said she was always working to support the family.
According to Hagler, Brandon Goodwin confessed to the murder during an interview with detectives. Authorities declined to release a motive.
Neighbors still have plenty of questions.
“The first thing I would want to know is why? Why, because his mother would do anything in the world to help him,” said McClinton.
McClinton said Maria Goodwin’s family lives outside of the country.
Brandon Goodwin is undergoing a mental evaluation at an area hospital, police said.
Once he is released, he will be held on a $150,000 bond.
