Victim shot and killed after allegations of sexually assaulting a teen identified

BIRMINGHAM, Ala (WIAT) — Birmingham Police are conducting a homicide investigation after a person was shot and killed on Sunday, according to Lt. Sean Edwards of Birmingham Police.

Police have identified the victim as 47-year-old Erskine Hawkins of Birmingham.

The shooting incurred in the 1100 block of 15th place S.W. Officers responded to a call of a person shot around 3:15 p.m. Upon arrival, they found Hawkins suffering from a gun shot wound. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators learned that the shooting stemmed from allegations that Hawkins sexually assaulted his girlfriend’s 13-year-old daughter. The daughter told family members and they retaliated.

Police believe the suspects are family members of the alleged sexual assault victim. No suspects have been named or taken into custody at this time.
