Birmingham Police investigating after male victim was shot in the chest

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Birmingham Police are investigating a shooting in the 1300 block of 17th Street SW, according to a release from the department.

Police responded to the location on a call of a nonresponsive person at the location around 9:15 a.m., and arrived to find the victim’s brother, who stated that he was told his brother did not arrive to work.

He went to the home for a welfare check, and arrived to find his brother, 56-year-old Larry Sanders, unresponsive in a chair in his bedroom. Birmingham Fire and Rescue arrived and spotted what appeared to be a gunshot wound to the victim’s chest.

Officials believe that while Sanders sat in the chair, an unknown suspect fired a handgun at the victim, striking him in the chest. Police are still trying to establish a motive.
