TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WIAT)- A perfect season came to an abrupt end for Briarwood Christian Thursday night. The Lions fell to St. Paul’s 17-14 in the 5A State Championship game at Bryant-Denny Stadium.
Briarwood held a lead most the game, leading 14-3 late in the third quarter after quarterback Michael Hiers’ second touchdown pass to wide receiver Hudson Hartsfield. St. Paul’s cut that lead to 14-9 less than a minute later.
With under two minutes to go the Saints took the lead for good on Swift Lyle’s six-yard touchdown pass to Oliver Willman. The Saints made the two-point conversion to take the lead 17-14.
Briarwood had one final chance for the win but turned the ball over on downs.
“We put in hard work,” Hartsfield said. “I can’t tell you how close our team is, a group of brothers. I played my heart out for them. I know they did the same for me. We have nothing to be ashamed of.”
Briarwood finishes the season 14-1, their highest win total since 2007.
